It preserves the possibility of trust, lowers the payoffs for perpetual retaliation, and gives humans a moral lever to shape any intelligence we create. In a world where ASI can iterate on our designs, the rarest — and possibly the most vital — trait we can hand it is the ability to halt violence and choose compassion over vengeance.
